Prescription Matters
Prescription co-ordinator
We recently engaged the services of a dedicated prescription co-ordinator with many years of invaluable experience in local Pharmacies. Joanne routinely handles prescriptions and prescription related queries on a daily basis and at both surgery sites. Should you need to contact the Practice to discuss a request after you have submitted it, please telephone Joanne Webster between 1pm and 2pm Monday to Friday or leave a message for her to call you back.
48 hour turnaround
Please allow 2 working days to process your request into a prescription at your chosen collection point. This means that if you submit a request on a Friday you can reasonably expect to be able to collect your prescription by Tuesday evening.
Allowing 48 hours to produce a prescription provides adequate time for us to conduct appropriate safety checks on the request, generate a prescription, have it signed and transfer it to your indicated collection point. We handle hundreds of prescriptions a day. Last minute requests or 'urgent' demands put pressure on an already busy system, potentially putting your safety or that of other patients' at risk. As a result we make no guarantees to produce a prescription in less than 48 hours and any such requests are handled entirely at the Duty Doctor's discretion.
To improve patient safety we have stopped accepting telephone requests for repeat medications, we do however accept requests online, in person, by post and by FAX.
If you receive repeat medications you will be given a list of your drugs for re-ordering purposes.
Treatment advice Notices
Patients returning from hospital clinics with "Treatment advice Notices" should expect a 48 hour turnaround time for their prescriptions. As these requests have not been initiated by our own GPs, they may be declined until further discusssion with one of our GPs. This is in the interests of your own safety and we therefore ask for your understanding.
Private Prescriptions
Patients returning from private clinics with private prescriptions should expect a 48 hour turnaround time for their prescriptions. Chevin Medical Practice and the NHS are under no obligation to convert these private prescriptions into NHS prescriptions and as these requests have not been initiated by our own GPs they may be declined until further discusssion with one of our GPs. This is in the interests of your own safety and we therefore ask for your understanding.
Common causes of delay/refusal
The repeat re-ordering system is not for unique or non-repeat items.
If you have not requested a 'repeat' item for over 18 months, it may be removed automatically by the system.
If you have over run your review date (clearly indicated beneath each medication on your re-ordering slip) your GP may require you to attend for a review before issuing further repeat medications. This is for your own safety and in line with good medical practice. Please bear this in mind when ordering.
If you do not have up to date contact details (email or telephone) we have no means to alert you promptly to any problems. Please ensure we have up to date contact information.
Medication reviews
Chevin Medical Practice aims to review all patients on repeat medication annually (6 monthly in some cases).
This is to ensure you are tolerating your medications and to assess the problems for which they were first prescribed.
Our nursing team are well trained and experienced in most medication reviews and usually you will be directed to them. This allows us to direct more complex patients or those with specific queries to our GP colleagues.
We routinely issue 2 months supply (56 days) with very few exceptions (eg the contraceptive pill is issued 6 monthly & HRT 3 monthly).
The Practice reserves the right to decline a request if it is felt inappropriate or our systems indicate that you are over-using medication, or are in need of a medication review.
